If you’re dependent on that ecosystem, then switching to any other browser might be a challenge, although cross-compatibility is improving Syncing Which browser is preferable comes down to which devices you want to cast to, although Chromecast is likely the more popular solution.Ĭhrome also holds an advantage because it hooks into the entire Google ecosystem, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Maps. Apps run well on both platforms.įinally, when you want to cast your content to another device, Edge uses the Miracast and DNLA protocols, while Chrome outputs to Chromecast devices. It’s a great accessibility feature that makes it possible for those with limited vision to access written words.īoth browsers support turning webpages into apps, and while the process is a bit different, the net result is the same. Theoretically, that means that Edge could gain more browser extensions than Chrome over time, but Chrome’s popularity makes the Chrome Store a common target for developers.Įdge also offers a Read Aloud feature that will read everything on a webpage in a pleasant voice. So far, we haven’t run into an extension that won’t install and run on Edge without issue. You can add Edge extensions from the Windows Store, which has a more limited selection and extensions from the Chrome Web Store, although it requires manually accessing it. Then there’s the Editor, Microsoft’s built-in answer to writing assistants like Grammarly. Microsoft also added an Edge Bar that can float or run along the edge of a display and provides a quick look into news and weather and provides access to some Edge features. You can easily access those groups by clicking on a collection, bringing you back to a particular working state quickly and easily. For example, there is Edge Collections, which lets you group similar webpages and name them. Although most modern browsers offer the same essential capability, that’s a nice feature in its own right.Įdge also has some features that Chrome doesn’t. Just install Microsoft’s new browser accept the offer to sync over your passwords, bookmarks, addresses, and more from Chrome and you’re off to the races. Making the switch from the Chrome browser to Edge is simple enough in terms of features. ![]() ![]() If you’re someone who’s bothered by how much of a memory-hog Google Chrome browser has become, Microsoft Edge is the clear winner in this regard. In one test, Edge used 665MB of RAM with six pages loaded while Chrome used 1.4GB - that’s a meaningful difference, especially on systems with limited memory. Chrome used to be known for how little RAM was used, but these days, it’s become bloated. Microsoft Edge does have one significant performance advantage over Chrome: Memory usage. Granted, Chrome narrowly beats Edge in the Kraken and Jetstream benchmarks, but it’s not enough to recognize in day-to-day use. ![]() The similarities continue in performance. Fortunately, either can be switched at will and is only a temporary nuisance.Įdge and Chrome are both built on the Chromium open-source browser using the Blink rendering engine, and as such, they’re more similar than they are different. Edge defaults to Microsoft’s Bing, naturally, while Google defaults to Google’s search engine. One noticeable difference, though, is in the default search engine and homepage. In short, if you switch from Chrome to Edge, you’ll notice very little difference in your everyday browsing. Right-click to the right of the tabs, and you’ll see the same tabs menu. Sure, the arrow buttons and other icons on Edge and Chrome look slightly different, but the URL/search bar is mostly the same, and the symbols for extensions and add-ons are in the same place. I’ve been in line for the ladies’ room in New York and heard people talking about one of my movies. That was my fantasy.īut have you ever heard people talking about your films? Yeah, I did! And my big dream, my big fantasy, was to go to the library or a bookstore and listen to two people who had read one of my books talking about it from the other side of the aisle. It’s another world that I can go into and find happiness. I found it’s been a place for me of solace and joy. I would sit up at night and read-and write love poems to my dog. I knew that I loved film from watching those two movies-which still rank as my favorites-but I fell in love with writing when I just needed it as a young child as a place to put my feelings and my emotions. I never actually dreamt of screenwriting. I saw To Kill A Mockingbird when I was young, followed by Lawrence of Arabia, and that was it. Linda Woolverton: Well, I always loved film. Vanity Fair: When did you first fall in love with film and writing? And which came first? We caught up with Woolverton to talk about her thoughts on Emma Watson as Belle, her record-breaking career, and some of the burning questions about Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King that the Internet just can't let go of. This weekend brings Alice Through the Looking Glass, her first sequel, and next year marks another huge landmark: the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, based on the characters she created more than 20 years ago. Linda Woolverton was a playwright and author when she got her start with Disney, writing 1991’s era-defining hit Beauty and the Beast, and since then has written Disney standouts like The Lion King, Maleficent, and Alice in Wonderland. The first woman to write an animated Disney feature was also the first woman with a sole writing credit on a billion-dollar blockbuster-and, if you were born in the 80s, probably the woman who shaped your childhood as much as your own mother. Nylon actually has a fourth appealing characteristic that you will surely appreciate: it is less expensive. Polyester is marginally better in this category, but the advantage is insufficient for giving up elasticity. Nylon lines enjoy quite a long life in that environment. It is like the difference between hitting the steering wheel or hitting the air bag.Īs for nylon's resistance to ultraviolet damage, dock lines - particularly permanent dock lines - live in the sun. ![]() Nylon doesn't come taut suddenly, but dissipates the load by stretching. Even if the rope is strong enough not to break, it is hammering cleats and bitts with every surge. The likely consequence is a broken line - not unlike how you might snap a piece of thread with a jerk. When your boat surges against an unyielding dock line, the load on the line goes from zero to the maximum at the instant the line comes taut. The value of strength is self-evident, but the benefits of elasticity may not be as obvious. It is incredibly strong, it is very stretchy, and it is very good at resisting the harmful effects of sunlight. Nylon has three characteristics that make it ideal for dock lines. The right rope for dock lines is plain old nylon. These may be good for large boats in protected marinas, but for tying your boat to whatever dock, slip, pier, or seawall you might encounter, you should skip right over all rope labeled polyester or Dacron or Kevlar or Spectra or any other fancy name. In pursuit of dock lines that do not stiffen with age, some rope manufacturers have in recent years begun offering pre-spliced dock lines made from "stretchy" polyester. For dock lines, however, sailors and powerboaters alike need a rope that does stretch. ![]() Most marine cordage is for general or specialized use aboard sailboats, and the less it stretches, the more it is revered by sailors. If you are after rope to secure your boat to the dock, you can - and should - ignore most of those spools. ![]() When you decide to purchase dock lines, it is possible to be overwhelmed by the variety of rope available. The sum of a sequence is known as a series, and the harmonic series. It is a progression formed by taking the reciprocals of an arithmetic. Prove that a stack of n identical strips arranged in this way will just avoid tipping over the table edge. Harmonic sequences can be full-texture sequences or linear intervallic pattern sequences. (a) Arrange a stack of n strips of length 2, one on top of the other, with the bottom strip protruding distance 1 n beyond the edge of the table, the second strip from the bottom protruding 1 n − 1 beyond the leading edge of the bottom strip, the third strip from the bottom protruding 1 n − 2 beyond the leading edge of the strip below it, and so on until the ( n − 1 ) th strip from the bottom protrudes distance 1 2 beyond the leading edge of the strip below it, and the top strip protrudes distance 1 beyond the leading edge of the strip below it (see Figure 10). As with sequences, a series of parallel first- inversion tri- ads serves either to prolong a harmony or as a transition between harmonic functions. One strip balances exactly at its midpoint, so can protrude a total distance of 1 without tipping over. (Identical empty plastic CD cases can serve as a useful illustration, provided one focuses on their rectangular side profile, rather than the almost square frontal cross-section.) The goal is to construct a ‘stack’ in such a way as to stick out as far as possible beyond a table edge.
